What is a financial plan? It can be as simple or as complex as you like, but essentially a financial plan is a roadmap showing how a set of goals will be reached. It is important to have a financial plan in place at all times, but particularly so as the retirement years approach.

Like any good map, a financial plan should alert you to the fact that there will be hills and valleys, curves and bumps along the way. It should also let you know in no uncertain terms if you are on a dead-end street going nowhere. It is NOT designed to somehow magically wish away problems. It should alert you to them so that you can deal with them effectively.

It should be flexible, outlining alternative routes, different strategies for achieving the same thing. It should outline the risks associated with different strategies.

It is important to update financial plans on a regular basis.
