My Background

I have been in the financial services industry since 1986. During the final year of my MBA in France, I worked for a small French bank, researching the Mergers and Acquisitions market in France.

In 1987, I was hired by a large Japanese Stockbroker to advise UK and Swedish institutions - insurance companies, pension funds, and fund management companies of all stripes - on the rather esoteric field of Japanese Eurodollar Equity Warrants, and later, pure Japanese equities. In 1990, I was privileged to be the first non-Japanese staff ever transferred to another corporate branch in another country - in this case, Singapore. There, I was responsible for visiting Southeast Asian companies, writing research reports, and relaying them to head office and my institutional clients. I soon learned a thing or two about spotting the difference between a good value and the not-so-good values that were often the flavour of the day. I built up a library of hundreds of investment-related books, and became fascinated with the wild over and under valuations that were possible in the market. For example, it is clear that Japan in 1989 was probably 5 times overvalued, whereas Hong Kong in 1992 was probably 5 times undervalued.

In 1992 I decided to make a change, and became an independent floor trader (what's known as a 'local') at the Singapore International Monetary Exchange, where for 5 years I traded my own capital on the floor. After moving back to Canada, I worked as a trader on the floor of the Toronto Futures Exchange (TFE), which closed in 1999.

After being repeatedly asked for advice by friends and family, I finally decided to join Manulife Securities Incorporated as a Financial Advisor. Since joining Manulife Securities Incorporated, I have helped clients of all sizes achieve growth in their portfolios while still ensuring that capital is preserved. I write a bi-monthly newsletter entitled "Focus on Investments", where I like to introduce investment ideas and concepts that are not well known or appreciated by most investors.
